The meaning of this word helps explain a lot when reading the letter to the editor. The article refers to this particular religion influencing the way people view dicipling their children.

Final Essay: Thesis

I think that there is a fine line between beating children and whipping them to teach them a lesson. I beleive that you should whip your kids to teach them a lesson, but like previously stated. There is a fine line between beating and punishing.

College(s)

OUC
Ohio University- Chillicothe is a great place to come and meet friends along side with learning. OUC's focus on their web page is about the small town environment. They feature many pictures of students sitting together and interacting. I think that most colleges try to put this on their website. Something that I did notice that I thought was interesting is that they had a picture of two generations of the same family. It shows that OUC has some history.
UofL
The University of Louisville has much more to offer on their web page. Of course, they do have a lot more diversity, students, etc. They feature their latest event, a house speaker visiting, sports, and a campus picture. They have many other links to what is going on and off of campus. They are much more organized with links to different parts of their site.

Ruby

I was somewhat shocked to read this article. I think that the article is quite interesting in the fact of what it promoted. It is awesome that they promoted Ruby. Ruby stands for something that is somewhat true. As soon as you hit an age that you can start to understanding things, you have all these ideas forced upon you. Whether or not the idea is broad or narrow; they are forced upon you. The idea forced upon you that Ruby disagrees with is that you do not have to look like the Barbie’s and action figures that you grow up playing with. When you do think about it you are made to think that you have to have a Barbie figure or the muscles of an action figure. In a sense, this is unfair to people because as you grow up you start looking at other things that probably resemble Barbie or an action figure. For an instance, when I was younger I used to be a sports fanatic. Everything I done revolved around sports. So for instance, when I was really young I probably looked at sports cartoon books. Sports cartoon books would now be equivalent to ESPN the Magazine. These are the figures I would be viewing to be examples of what you should be to be an excellent athlete.

-Negative-

I make my way through the cloud of smoke to the back corner of the smoking area at the Stevenson Center. Then take a seat on the cold hard concrete and sit and observe the day dwindling away. A utility guy is obstructing my view to the beautiful walkway as he talks on his walkie-talkie about something probably he will have to fix. A large black man then adds to the interruption of my attempt to enjoy some peace and quite before the sun goes down. His first recipient to his call did not answer, therefore he feels the need to try and interrupt even more by making another call. As this all comes to an end Doug tells me a story about how his girlfriend had to wake him up early in the morning for a pointless doctors appointment. We talk about some other things and then after Seth tells me something we decide to go in a feed our starving stomachs.

+Positive+

As the sun is going down I take a seat on the back corner of the Stevenson Center. I am overlooking the walk area that is dressed in warm colored leaves by the forest when a man walks in front of me wearing a casual uniform. Dressed in green, the man starts pondering back and forth as his mustache bounces up and down. Once finished with the conversation on his business device he decides to bring the small white stick towards his mouth and takes a light puff. I notice a tall African American man stand up with a bright white smile coming from his face. He takes out his cell phone and leaves a pleasant voice mail and walks to my left. He stands at the edge of the bright green grass that is covered in those warm leaves and calls once more while we both notice a younger man taking a jog by the Fall-seasoned forest. I take a glace to my right and notice a man in a vibrant purple plaid shirt. He takes a cigarette out of his front pocket and takes a flick of the thumb to light it. Doug grabs my attention and we start talking about a gorgeous young lady for a few minutes to pass some time. Seth then directs me in the direction to find a cheap and affordable new car as I finish up writing my observations.

Marvel vs DC (1st Draft)

Marvel vs. DC Universe
What have cartoons came to today? You would assume from the title that I would be talking about Wolverine, Spiderman, & Ironman matching up and fighting against Batman, the Green Lantern, and the Flash. Well if you are thinking that you are thinking in the completely wrong direction. I am talking about poetry and how a poem featuring the Hulk as well as Superman. The poems I have read dealing with these classic cartoon characters should not be in poetry. Or should they… The two poems I have read have taken these ultra-strong; super human characters and put them into poetry. The perspectives of each of them are completely opposite of what you would normally read in most texts about these characters and are also quite interesting.
The first poem that I read, note, passed to superman, obviously features Superman not the Hulk. This is a free verse poem that has no rhythm or rhyme scheme. I would consider this a “sneaky” poem for the simple fact that the meaning behind it is really obvious, but at the same time hidden. The poem being a “sneaky” poem, compliments the meaning behind the poem. The meaning in this poem is that nobody recognizes Clark Kent, Superman’s alter ego, but recognize Superman. Superman and Clark Kent are the same exact person, but who knows who Clark Kent is? The reason I know that they are talking about Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, is because it says “if I had seen you dressed in your blue suit I would have known you.”
What I learned from the Incredible Hulk, was the second poem that I read. This poem also does not have any rhythm or rhyme. The focus of this poem is not about smashing things or the hulk’s heart rate. It is about the Hulk’s more feminine side. I think that the meaning behind this poem is that every guy has a soft side, no matter how angry or mean they might be. The reason I say this is because it talks about a woman’s soft touch and her smile can work wonders. I think that they use the Hulk as a reference because he comes off as being such an angry person. In the end though the woman he is in love with is always the only one able to calm him down.  Therefore, it shows that no matter how angry a man gets “a smile and a soft touch along the bicep can work wonders.”
The reason for picking the two poems that I did is because they both were dealing with comic book characters. I thought it was interesting that the two poets could take these action packed characters and put them into a completely different “atmosphere.” When you think of poetry you normally think of a love story summed up into stanzas that rhyme or something along those lines. I understand that most of the poems in Seriously Funny are not about that, but for the average joe or somebody who has not taken writing and rhetoric would assume what was said in the previous sentence. Eye-catching would be a good word that would describe another reason for choosing these poems. I think that these two poems are part of the few that I have seen that involve a comic book character. I would also think that the majority of the people who do not read poetry would pick something along the lines of these instead of something such as My Beloved by Charles Simic. The funny thing is; is that I believe that My Beloved is more interesting than note, passed to superman.
Both of these poems are free verse poems that do not rhyme. Neither of these have any type of rhythm either. The obvious characteristic that these two poems have in common is that they are talking about comic book characters. This is basically all of the “likes” I could find between the note, passed to superman and what I learned from the Incredible Hulk.
The differences between the two poems are ongoing. The way that the first poet takes Superman and puts him into their poem is much different from the way the second poet does with the Hulk. The note from note, passed to superman is talking to Superman directly in first person through the note. To where in what I learned from the Incredible Hulk they are just using the Hulk as a reference. The way they brought the meaning out in the poem about the Hulk was much more broad; or easier to understand. Which I think is odd because you would think that since they are talking to Superman in first person through the note you would be able to understand it easier. I guess that you also have to think about the content of the poem not the perspective of how it is told. Something else that I thought was odd was that the Superman poem was more than half the length of the poem about the Hulk, but twice as difficult to understand. Something else I should consider is it is not the length of the poem, but the content in it.

Patriotic Art

I think that patriotic art can be many things. I think that as long as it is representing the country in a positive way than it should be considered patriotic art. I think that the Uncle Sam poster is by far the most prestigious work of patriotic art, but certainly not the most original. I am talking about the art because I am really unsure of what we were supposed to get out of this article; Once Again, Patriotic Themes Ring True as Art. I think that the Uncle Sam work of art is most certainly one of the most powerful of any. I think that is also the most recognized for the simple fact of how old it is and how much power that it exerts.

Intro

Here are two editorial cartoons about the “dreaded” back to school shopping. The settings are completely opposite and take place in a completely different way. The author of the first cartoon, Joe Heller, is a prestigious editorial cartoonist. He takes an odd perspective of how back to school shopping is dreadful. He does not present to his audience by telling them that back to school shopping is dreadful, instead he makes it out to be that it is scary. The second editorial cartoonist is also a prestigious editorial cartoonist. Steve Kelly takes the broad approach to his cartoon by making the point of back to school shopping so unfortunate that the readers instantly get what point he is trying to make. Both cartoonists take a different approach to how the audience perceives their cartoon.

Thesis

The two editorial cartoons I observed are talking about the harsh reality of back to school shopping.

B2S Shopping Cartoon(2)

Topic: Back to school shopping is OUTRAGEOUS!

Story: It is a father looking at his son's back to school shopping receipt. He spends so much that it is going to make him work two jobs.

Audience: It is in present day America. And the cartoon was published in The New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Author: Steve Kelly
He is a devoted political cartoonist that writes for the The New Orleans Times-Picayune. He went to Dartmouth College. He has won numerous awards, including six first-place finishes from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. In 2001, he won first-place awards from the CNPA, the Los Angeles Press Club and the Best of the West competition.

Argument:  It is saying that back to school shopping is so outrageous that middle class people and down are going to have to work two jobs.

Composition: It is a simple single-frame cartoon.

Word & Image: It uses both text and pictures to describe the cartoon. The shopping cart and receipt to show how much they bought. And the text to describe that their current salary isn't going to pay for all of it.

Imagery: A simple scene with a middle class family is featured in this cartoon. The imagery is described in the previous answer.

Tone: The cartoon is a serious cartoon. It is getting across the point that back to school shopping is outrageous.

Character & Setting: A middle class family with a cart full of stuff and a receipt down to the ground is getting across the point that the family will have to work two jobs.

Cultural Resonance: It refers to actual people in modern day middle class America.

B2S Shopping Cartoon

Topic: Back to school shopping

Story: A scary camp fire scene talking about back to school shopping

Audience: Featured in present day America, this cartoon has a literal meaning to the "ideal" male about back to school shopping. This cartoon was found in the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Author: Joe Heller
He is from Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is writing for the Green Bay Press-Gazette. He is a prestigious editorial cartoonist. He has won many awards such as eight best of Gannette Awards, six Milwaukee Press Club Awards, and three John Fischette Editorial Cartoon Awards. He has a collection of his work in a book called Give 'em Heller. He has done many things other than editorial cartoons such as illustrate children books, drawn for museum exhibits, and drawn in various comic books. He holds a BA in Fine Arts.

Argument: The argument is that back to school shopping is outrageous. It shows this by the settings and the text that goes along with it. I think there is some irony in the fact that I believe that he would be much  more afraid of an axe-murder compared to back to school shopping.

Composition: This is a simple single-frame cartoon

Word & Image: It uses both text and pictures to get across the idea of back to school shopping is scary.

Imagery: It is a scene of people around a campfire telling scary stories. The funny thing is that back to school shopping is not "scary story" scary.

Tone: The tone is "seriously funny." It is serious in a most dad's eyes and funny in the fact that they really shouldn't be afraid of back to school shopping.

Character & Setting: The scene is a campfire of a couple middle class families.

Cultural Resonance: It is something that really happens, but the fictional thing about it is the swamp monster and people really getting scared over back to school shopping.

Fieldwork

The poem called fieldwork is about a woman is really in touch with the wildlife. She loves the outdoors and I would assume she would live their if she could. I do believe that she did visit a jungle or something for an extended period of time. The reason that I believe this is because it talks about the tree tops, different types of insects, and some other things. I also think that the perspective of the poem is being told from an animal of some sort. I am unsure of what type of animal it is, but I am pretty sure it is being told from an animal point of view. It talks about the painting Michelangelo painted and says “on the same day he finished the finger of god, as it lazed towards the finger of man.”  I think that this animal is talking about the rain forest getting destroyed. I believe this because it also says “and everything would come later, taxonomy and papers and extension of her grant, had nothing to do with her gratitude toward the jar and the black and red, the fierce creature inside, which she set on her pillow and touched from time to time to remind her body of its life in the trees.” It talks about taxation and papers that will come later. I think that these are the trees and the grant is the trees paying for the taxation. She in the previous quote is Mother Nature and the lives in her trees are whatever animal that lives in it.
I wrote the previous blog before this one….

Difference between poems

These two poems are a lot more complicated. I think that they have a much deeper hidden meaning to them. That is why I am having so much trouble figuring out what they mean. I think that the perspectives of these two poems are told differently from the poems of the first two weeks. I think that the perspectives of the poems told this week are told from animals and not human beings. I think this because the second poem is in a section that is called something about animals, human, and un. So I am taking a stab in the dark and guessing an animal is telling the poem. The first poem I am guessing as well because it talks about being in the weeds and rubbing your hind legs together, therefore, I am assuming it would be a cricket. But I still do not understand the poem to be honest, or the second one for that matter.

Chilton Response

Chilton’s essay is a very detailed look at what the Mexican drug cartels is doing along with a look at how the government is contemplating them. I agree with most of the points that Chilton states. I do question the part about the government though. I don’t know if the Mexican government is really cracking down or it is all show. In my opinion I believe that they are really not doing anything and are saying that they are. But at the same time I do not blame them for the simple fact of how powerful/dangerous the cartel has became. She talks about the color scheme of the cartoon. I think that the color scheme does set the mood. If I was Mexican I would probably interpret this a little different. I would take it as somewhat of an insult even though I would say that most people do realize what is going on and how bad it is. On the other hand, I would see it as a problem that has became out of hand. If I lived in Texas, Arizona, or any of the other bordering states I would more than likely have much more of an opinion on the topic because it would be affecting me more. She does a very good job at introducing the topic by not being very bias between who is to blame for the cartel. She says “the unpredictable economies in both countries and the issues resulting from drug use and trade have added tension to the already taut relationship. Blame flows easily and lands on various subjects—each government, drug cartel, drug users, and more.” I think that she does a wonderful job at explaining the cartoon along with backing up her facts! Not only does she do this by stating why she thinks something, but also by showing her work cited.

Muck-Clump

The author is getting across the idea of being a mature adult in arguments. I liked how he started off the beginning because I know that there are a ton of people out there that do this. Unfortunately, I do sometimes. I would have to say that the majority of people do though. I mean everybody strives to be right… I mean I know everybody strives to be right! I really enjoy this poem though, because I can relate to it. Growing up my mother and I did not always see eye to eye. Actually, we would never see eye to eye. So my dad would always tell me “to choose my battles wisely.” The reason for this is because my mother is a stubborn hot-head. Also another reason is because when I was younger I was the exact same way. As I grew older I have matured and have gotten better at “choosing my battles.” In my personal opinion, the author does a terrific job at getting his point across. Honestly, I would say that this is a simple poem and that most people would understand this poem.
